Igrački sajt IGN je objavio intervju sa Rockstar-om u kojem se otvoreno priča o vrsti zaštite koju će koristiti nadolazeća PC verzija GTA IV. Pored toga što će igra posedovati SecuROM zaštitu, igrači će morati da svoju verziju igre aktiviraju i putem interneta. Ukoliko igrač ne poseduje internet konekciju na svom računaru, moraće da GTA IV aktivira na računaru koji je povezan sa internetom, u suprotnom neće moći da instalira igru (ovo ne važi za "Direct2Drive" verziju igre)! Jedina pozitivna stvar u čitavoj priči je to što će igra neće posedovati instalacioni limit.
